Everyone likes to know they have some supporters out there. That’s why we are so grateful to Mark Angelo, a professor at BCIT and founder of BC Rivers Day, who has encouraged us from the beginning of our endeavors. Mr. Angelo has helped us in the past by sponsoring BCIT teams to participate in our rafting races. He recently sent us these words of support
“I appreciate the efforts of "Free Flowing Rivers" to better care for our waterways while also creating a greater public awareness of the plight of those communities that are, or will be, impacted by large dams. Our rivers are the arteries of the planet - and yet, in virtually every country, they continue to face an array of threats. I support your efforts to safeguard our rivers and wish you the best in your endeavors.
"
Sincerely, Mark Angelo, CM, OBC, MSc,
Founder and Chair of BC and World Rivers Day
“Thank you, Mr. Angelo, for continuing to lead the way in protecting the world’s rivers.
The weather was perfect for our first white water rafting race on the Papagayo River. Six teams came out to participate in the race, party with our crew, and listen to activists speak about the importance of preserving the free flowing Papagayo. This river is in danger of being dammed by the Mexican government to supply power for a huge Central American infrastructure program. This project may benefit the government, but it won’t benefit the people who will be flooded out of their homes.
Our student teams showed their passion for the river by participating in a peaceful activist day, painting colorful signs and stopping traffic on a bridge that crosses the Papagayo. For more stories and photos from the Mexican race, check out our road trip blog.
On March 14 2007 (International River Day Against Dams) Free Flowing Rivers worked with the community of Futaleufu, Chile to create a peaceful display of activism. A total of 120 people, 55 kayaks, 9 rafts, 6 inflatable kayaks, 5 cat-rafts and 2 dogs participated to create a sign that read 'No More Dams In Patagonia' (en espanol, 'No A Las Represas En La Patagonia') .
We recently completed a short documentary showing how this community came together to send their message to the world. Click here to view it.
