Do you want to learn more about protecting rivers and helping communities in need, while having a great adventure with friends? Our white water rafting races are the perfect opportunity.
The "Dam U" River Races bring together teams of university students, environmentalists, outdoor enthusiasts, and others. We want to give people the opportunity to learn more about rivers that are in danger, while appreciating the natural beauty and exhilaration that the water provides. By bringing people together, we are creating a social network for sharing ideas and creating capacity to protect our valuable resources.
Anyone is welcome to join these weekends of adventure and education. Rafting, meals, beverages, camping and entertainment are all included in our events. For pictures of these events, please visit our media page.
We are planning river races along the course of our road trip, working with local rafting companies and promoting in local universities and communities. Many of these race events take place on rivers that are currently threatened by hydro projects. These races are especially important for raising awareness about the communities that are in danger of being displaced by dams.
We will be holding races during our two-year road trip in a number of countries including Mexico, Costa Rica, Honduras, Ecuador, Peru, Chile, and Brazil. We have already established an annual race on the Rio Papagayo in Mexico, which brings together many local students and activists. To find out where we are planning our next race, check our road trip blog
Our core river race takes place at the end of September on the beautiful Thompson River out of Lytton, BC. Although this river is not currently in danger of being dammed, we feel it is a great location to bring people together, help them get out of the city for a weekend, and teach them a bit more about the rivers that ARE in danger.
The "Dam U" Lytton weekend has been a huge success the past two years, bringing in nearly 30 teams each time. For 2008, we hope to make the event even better by bringing in river activists and experts who can share their knowledge with our participants.
